It is exciting to find a game that
will truly teach a student. I believe the game is engaging and has a
definite objective that fits in our
schools standards and benchmarks.
This lesson has engaging
elements that students enjoy
and allows the teacher more
in class time, because the
students become familiar
with the subject on their own.
In addition, I really like the
virtual field trip/science experiment
to Mendel's garden included in
this lesson.
Not all students are comfortable
sharing their thoughts in the
classroom or they may need extra
time to collect and organize their
thoughts. A discussion done on a
wiki page allows these students the time that they need. This also forces
all students to participate in the
discussion of the story.
Because this lesson uses Billy
Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire"
for students to choose what their
three topics for research will be,
I think it really grabstheir interest.
Then they get to apply what they
learnedabout the signifcance of the
topics to that year and decide what
they believe a remake of the song
should include for the new millenium.
How it fits into the curriculum
In 7th grade science we study
cells and how they reprouduce.
This game introduces students
to CDK and Cyclin; their function
and the result if they fail to preform their function in the cell.
In 7th grade science we
study basic genetics. This is
an introduction to dominate and recessive traits and how they
are used with the Punnett Square.
In 8th grade literature class we
read a variety of types of literature.
This story is very thought provoking
because it doesn' t have a clearly
"right" choice of action. General
acctepted forms of morality in modern
American society supports either
action that the protagonist may take.
Our 8th grade American History class
starts at the Civil War and continues to 1990's.This lesson gives a fun
introduction to some of the major
events, people, and pop culture
icons from 1940-1980's.
